NBC cancels ‘Marry Me,’ ‘About a Boy’ and ‘One Big Happy’

The quest for laughs at NBC continues: The network has canceled the comedies “About a Boy,” “Marry Me” and “One Big Happy.”

“About a Boy” starred David Walton as an immature bachelor who strikes up an unlikely friendship with the nerdy boy next door, played by Benjamin Stockham. Minnie Driver costarred as the kid’s hippie mom.

It was adapted fom the novel by Nick Hornby (which was previously made into a 2002 film featuring Hugh Grant and Nicholas Hoult) and was developed for television by Jason Katims, the writer-producer of “Parenthood” and “Friday Night Lights.”

The series premiered at midseason in 2014 following the Winter Olympics and ranked as NBC’s highest-rated comedy last year, but despite a solid start and an impressive pedigree, viewership declined sharply this season.

Hopes were also high for freshman laugher “Marry Me,” about a long-term couple struggling to get to the altar. It was created by David Caspe, the writer behind the much-loved but canceled ABC sitcom “Happy Endings,” and starred Casey Wilson and Ken Marino. Reviews were mostly positive but ratings dropped off significantly over the show’s 14-episode run.

Produced by Ellen DeGeneres, “One Big Happy” starred Elisha Cuthbert as a lesbian pregnant with a baby fathered by her straight, male best friend (Nick Zano), who is in turn in love with another woman (Kelly Brook). It premiered in March to negative reviews and tepid ratings.

The cancellations leave “Undateable” as the only returning comedy at the network, once known for its blockbuster sitcoms “Friends,” “Seinfeld” and “Cheers.”
