David Weidman retrospective on view through July
In a 2010 Los Angeles Home profile of L.A. artist David Weidman, David A. Keeps detailed the growing popularity of the man behind classic silk-screened prints such as “Flower and Bugs†and “Cathedralâ€:
“Now, at age 89, David Weidman is experiencing more than a renaissance. It’s his heyday, thanks to a devoted following of collectors, admirers and entrepreneurs bringing his work to a wider audience. Youth-oriented retailer Urban Outfitters is introducing the artist to a new generation through Weidman pillows and wall art. Gingko Press is in its third printing of “The Whimsical Works of David Weidman and Also Some Serious Ones,†a 2009 career retrospective of a man whose name may have little resonance but whose groovy style is instantly recognizable among many children of the 1960s and ‘70s.
Four years later, the renaissance of David Weidman continues with his colorful and cheerful works popping up on the sets of “Mad Men†and a retrospective of nearly 100 works on display at Weidman Gallery.
The show, which opened June 28 with the 93-year-old in attendance, features hand-pulled original serigraphs that Weidman has signed. Unframed posters start as low as $40, and framed pieces start at $150.
Weidman opened the storefront in 1963 as a vintage poster and framing shop and it continues today under his niece Janet Zimberg. The exhibition is special, Zimberg said, as the gallery does not normally mount Weidman’s work in this way. “But his work is always available here, “ Zimberg said.
The show runs through July 31 at Weidman Gallery, 8272 Melrose Ave. A closing reception will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on July 31 with special incentives available. (323) 655-0087.
