New York Fashion Week spring-summer 2013: Jeremy Scott
NEW YORK -- Jeremy Scott presented his men’s and women’s spring-summer 2013 collection at Milk Studios on Sept. 12, the penultimate day of fashion week here.
The inspiration: Scott titled his show “Arab Spring,†and from the music to makeshift veils, there was no doubt that the collection drew inspiration from the Middle East.

The look: An ark’s worth of animal prints -- snake, giraffe, crocodile and leopard -- roamed free-range through a collection of overalls, hot pants, halter tops, jackets and over-the-knee boots. What wasn’t patent leather crocodile print seemed to be flowing silk printed with Scott’s clothes hanger logo design, and gold chains.
In addition, there were two pieces -- a woman’s top and a mesh dress -- that, at first glance, seemed to be covered in hundreds of gold-colored house keys – but were actually miniature machine guns. In a departure from the last couple of neon rave-colored collections, the pieces Scott sent down the runway were based in a palette of black, gold and teal.
And, while there were no burqas or chadors, there were a handful of makeshift veils that came down the runway, essentially black gauzy fabric held firmly in place by patent leather crocodile print or ostrich skin trucker-style caps.
The scene: The list of celebrities filling the front row seats included Paris Hilton, Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte and Tyra Banks, whose arrival, a good half-hour before the show started, touched off a feeding frenzy of photographers that lasted until the house lights dimmed and the first looks of the collection were steps from the runway.
The verdict: Given the title “Arab Spring†(shouldn’t that be “Arab Spring-Summer) Scott’s latest collection may raise a few eyebrows, but fashion-wise, it’s most noteworthy for shifting from the candy-colored, acid-trip hues of the past several seasons to a more grounded black and yellow palette.
