Architect John Bertram’s thoroughly modern materials

To create the visually light, organic modern effects in the Lookout house, Bertram Architects of Los Angeles used the following resources:

Cork floor: Four bedrooms are lined with oil-finished Marmol tiles by Natural Cork. They can be ordered through Linoleum City in Los Angeles, (323) 469-0063, www.linoleumcity.com.

Lighting: In the sun-drenched master bedroom, Bertram created a minimalist display with three sizes of Wohlert pendant lamps by Louis Poulsen hung at different lengths. They are $826 and up from www.2modern.com, (888) 222-4410. In the son’s bedroom, five Borden 316 fixtures -- shallow bowls in three diameters, each delivering indirect light -- were grouped to create a sci-fi sculptural look. Call Borden at (510) 357-0171 for pricing; www.bordenlighting.com.

House numbers: On the front gate, Bertram selected numbers produced in a collaboration between Design Within Reach and Dion Neutra, son and partner of Richard Neutra. They are $48 each at Design Within Reach, www.dwr.com.

Glass: Aluminum windows and the front door were locally bought through Metal Window Corp. in Inglewood, (310) 665-0490, www.metalwindowcorp.com. In the master bedroom, Bertram used a Norwood sliding door from Fleetwood as an enormous operable window. For dealers, call (800) 736-7363 or go to www.fleetwoodusa.com.

Shades: To darken and cool the light-filled rooms, Bertram installed recessed motorized Sivoia window shades by Lutron. For dealers, call (888) 588-7661 or visit www.lutron.com.

Stone: The split-face limestone used for the rough-hewn exterior and interior walls is Belair from Haussmann Natural Stone in Hayward, Calif.; (510) 782-5100; www.haussmannstone.com. Although terrazzo can be found in tile form, Bertram chose custom on-site installation of large swaths of floor as well as stair treads. He used Hermosa Terrazzo in Hermosa Beach; (310) 376-6678; www.hermosati.com.
