New L.A. bars for summer cocktails: Invention, Parish, Federal Bar, Old Lightning
Your summer cocktail options are growing. A wave of new L.A.-area bars have just opened or are soon to open, including a new wine bar (and cocktail program) at the Parish, the third-floor bar at the private Los Angeles Athletic Club and the coming Westside watering hole Old Lightning. Here are the details:
The historic Los Angeles Athletic Club downtown has revamped its third-floor restaurant and bar as part of a multimillion-dollar renovation. Invention opens this week with a menu of cocktails created by mixology consultants Marcos Tello and Aidan Demarest of Liquid Assets. The redesign by Tracy Beckmann (the bar at Mas Malo, the Tar Pit) still says “members only,†with a wood-canopied bar, plush leather chairs and chesterfield sofas. 431 W. 7th St., Los Angeles, (213) 625-2211, LAAC.com.
The Federal Bar opened its second location, in the former Madison Steakhouse on Pine Avenue in downtown Long Beach. The original Federal Bar is located in North Hollywood, and both are billed as gastropubs with an extensive beer list and cocktails. Federal Bar chef Shad Davis’ menu features the Federal Dog beef hot dog topped with shallot rings, pickled jalapenos and mustard; IPA-braised short ribs with melted leeks and hulk-smash potatoes; and the OMH! Burger with pepper jack, avocado and cayenne crispy onions. Owner Knitting Factory Entertainment says live entertainment will vary from jazz to spoken word to burlesque. 102 Pine Ave., Long Beach, (562) 435-2000, TheFederalBar.com.
The Parish in downtown L.A. has announced a new downstairs wine bar and a collaboration with bar consultants Proprietors LLC to expand its drinks offerings, with a revolving cocktail menu and expanded wine and beer lists. The new cocktail menu is available now (“refreshing modern aperitifs and interpreted modern classicsâ€), while the downstairs cafe is temporarily closed to make way for the new street-level Parish Wine Bar. 840 S. Spring St., Los Angeles, (213) 225-2400, TheParishLA.com.
Old Lightning is expected to open this summer, Los Angeles magazine reports. The new 25-seat Westside bar from Steve Livigni and Pablo Moix (La Descarga, Pour Vous, Black Market, Harvard & Stone) is to feature their collection of vintage spirits and classic cocktails. Done up like a ‘50s bachelor pad, there will be a dress code. 2905 Washington Blvd., Marina del Rey.
