Samuel L. Jackson political video riffs on ‘Go the F-- to Sleep’
Actor Samuel L. Jackson, with his resonant voice and imposing presence, was the perfect choice to record the audiobook version of the bestselling children’s book for adults, “Go the F-- to Sleep.â€
Today, Jackson riffs on the title in a political video, “Wake the F-- Up,†which calls for 2008 Obama supporters to become active in the presidential campaign. He pops up alarmingly in a suburban family’s home, listing things they might not like about Mitt Romney and exhorting them to -- well, you know.
The video was paid for by the Jewish Council for Education and Research, which also produced the video “The Great Schlep†starring Sarah Silverman. Neither is the kind of campaign ad that might appear on broadcast television -- they’re long, funny and laced with profanity.
“Go the F-- to Sleep†by Adam Mansbach and illustrator Ricardo Cortez has been a sensational hit for publisher Akashic Books. Since its publication in June 2011, it has sold more than a million copies. Its audio version -- the one read by Samuel L. Jackson -- is No. 2 on Amazon’s Humor CD audiobooks list.
Although Akashic has not yet replied to our request for comment, a look at the publisher’s left-leaning list seems to put its world view in line with “Wake the F-- Up.â€
