Top Golden Globes style moments? Just look at the greens, blues, velvet — and Lady Gaga

The 2019 Golden Globes red carpet — the first of the year’s awards-show circuit that stretches into late February’s Academy Awards — appeared to mirror fashion-wise the feeling that the country is, if not split into two separate camps, definitely headed in that direction.

Almost from the start on the red carpet Sunday at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, looks ping-ponged between the dark and heavy (colors including burgundy and green and weighty fabrics such as velvet) and the light (the palest of ice blues, lavenders and suffragette white) with pops of bright color in between. Look no further than the eye-catching yellow courtesy of Rachel Brosnahan and Claire Foy and director Spike Lee’s regal purple ensemble — a custom-made Atelier Versace tuxedo with coordinating silk purple shirt.

Those notably riding the evening’s velvet trend train included Glenn Close (“The Wifeâ€) in a custom Armani Privé black silk velvet cape, paired with black velvet trousers; Lucas Hedges (“Boy Erasedâ€) in a custom Giorgio Armani dark brown velvet tuxedo; “Crazy Rich Asians†author Kevin Kwan (in a green and purple velvet paisley print double-breasted Etro blazer); and Taraji P. Henson, who managed a trend twofer thanks to a custom Vera Wang gown in dark green velvet with a plunging neckline.

Others in verdant shades included Idris Elba (in a green, three-piece shawl collar tuxedo by Ozwald Boateng); Yvonne Strahovski (in a custom, strapless sage-green silk-chiffon gown by Alberta Ferretti Limited Edition); and Allison Janney in a turquoise crepe gown by Christian Siriano, the same label that custom-made Connie Britton’s crystal-beaded mint-colored column gown. Catherine Zeta-Jones wore an Elie Saab dress that was a brighter shade of green, and Michelle Yeoh accessorized her green gown with the stunning green ring that appeared on-screen in “Crazy Rich Asians.â€

Amy Adams’ custom Calvin Klein by Appointment teal silk crepe dress seemed to have a foot in both color camps. It appeared positively dark green in some photos from the red carpet and absolutely light blue in others.

Also sporting notable blue hues were Gina Rodriguez (a pale blue halter gown by Reem Acra); Dakota Fanning (an Armani Privé ice blue silk satin bustier gown); Lupita Nyong’o in a custom cobalt-blue chain-fringed dress from Calvin Klein by Appointment (the same label responsible for Troye Sivan’s Prussian blue shawl-collar tuxedo); and Gemma Chan in a navy blue gown from the fall 2018 Valentino Haute Couture collection.

Valentino Haute Couture was also responsible for one of the night’s biggest statement dresses (literally — as the train required a pair of minders just to move it down the red carpet), a custom periwinkle gown created for Lady Gaga by the house’s creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli, that perfectly matched the shade of Judy Garland’s dress from the 1954 version of “A Star Is Born.†Rounding out the memorable ensemble was a head of hair dyed to match and more than $5 million worth of sustainably sourced Tiffany & Co. diamonds, including a custom-made necklace featuring more than 300 diamonds with a 20-carat pear-shaped sparkler in the center.
