New York Fashion Week: Tory Burch’s new ease
Raw met refined in Tory Burch’s superb spring collection shown Tuesday at New York Fashion Week, which drew a crowd of Tory enthusiasts that included Kiernan Shipka and Lily Aldridge.
There was a back-to-basics vibe, inspired by the time that artist Francoise Gilot spent living with Pablo Picasso in Vallauris in the south of France in the late ‘40s and early ‘50s. During that time, Picasso created primitivist pottery featuring bold swirls, fauns and faces with a whimsical charm. And those motifs made their way into Burch’s no-fuss collection in the form of graphic-yet-simple jacquards, woven accents and modern-looking accessory designs.
The look: Natural, unfettered beauty. Textured knits, not busy prints. Neutral colors, not brights. Relaxed silhouettes. Flat desert boots (one comfortable shoe that has yet to make a Birkenstock-like fashion comeback -- so get ready) and woodblock heels.
Key pieces: Mustard-and-cream fringed cotton jacquard jacket with crochet collar and matching shorts. Navy blue broderie anglaise skirt with wavy red pattern. Fringed blanket wrap skirt. Wood-grain stripe dress. Cream-colored basket-weave short-sleeve sweater and shibori print pants. Hand-dipped gold, spiral disk earrings. Chunky woodblock heel slide sandals. Suede desert boots. “Face” crossbody bags.
The verdict: An irresistible springtime palette cleanser full of pieces that are versatile enough for a woman to make them her own.
