New York Fashion Week: Monique Lhuillier’s sunny outlook

Los Angeles designer Monique Lhuillier set out to capture the magic hour of sunrise in her spring collection shown Friday night at New York Fashion Week and succeeded with an enchanting show, complete with a finale of soft cellophane petals raining down on the runway.

The look: Gossamer gorgeousness. Lhuillier showed a more casual take on evening, with sleek, scuba-inspired cocktail dresses, structured evening shorts, peplum tops and rompers in washed watercolor hues of satin, with reflective lame and lace details, or shimmery embroidery.

Key pieces: White floral embroidered peplum top worn with black structured shorts and rose gold sandals. Pale yellow strapless drop waist dress with layered pink organza petal skirt. Sunrise printed scuba dress. White and metallic lace high low gown.

The verdict: Exquisitely executed, even if a few of the silhouettes did look a bit tricky for anyone with hips to wear. Lhuillier just keeps getting better and better. Pulling off a pastel-washed look that’s soft and feminine but still sporty and modern is not easy, but she did it.
