NEW YORK -- Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, named 2012’s top women’s wear designers by the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America, presented their fall 2013 collection Thursday morning in the sumptuous rooms of a $48-million Gilded Age town house on New York’s Upper East Side, complete with twinkling chandeliers, faded Oriental rugs and mismatched chairs.

The designer sisters were dressed like haute ragamuffins in furs and pointy toed shoes, their long hair fashionably mussed up. They found the space, rented for the occasion, with the help of a real estate agent, they said. “Because we don’t have our own retail space, it is important to present the collection in right environment.â€

The inspiration: Edwardian-era street style photographs by Edward Sambourne, with a few Asian touches mixed in.

The look: The kind of clothes eccentric-chic hostesses would wear to host art salons, right down to the ruffled slipper mules. Long-line silhouettes with subtle volumes, and the most exquisite materials, including small flower and small leaf jacquards, paisley cloque and astrakhan fur. Silk crepe and wool coats with cross mink collars or kimono-inspired side ties. A silver mink coat with pearls suspended from the collar points. Cigarette pants over merino leggings. A cozy fisherman knit cashmere sweater with volume through the back and sleeves over pleated white trousers. Long-line tunic dress in black jacquard with fur hem. Ivory, hand embroidered and beaded slouchy evening top worn with an ivory silk jacquard wrap skirt.

The scene: The designers worked the room greeting guests, including their father David Olsen.

The verdict: A unique take on laid-back super luxe for the .001%.
