Is Kanye West destined to be a groomzilla?

Kanye West proposed to Kim Kardashian in the kind of over-the-top style that befits a rap king and a reality star.

He rented At&T Park in San Francisco, hired a 50-piece orchestra and invited friends and family to watch as he surprised her with a 15-carat, cushion cut Lorraine Schwartz diamond ring on her birthday Monday night.

At first blush, the very public proposal contrasts with the quiter proposal from Kardashian’s ex-, Kris Humprhies, who proposed in 2011 in candlelight in her bedroom with rose petals spelling out “Will you marry me?†and presented her with a 16-carat diamond ring (also from Lorraine Schwartz). Of course, the couple wasn’t really alone. The whole thing later aired on “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,†so the room was likely filled with camera operators and sound technicians, at the very least.

Are proprosals like this the stuff of fairy tales?

Well, not so much, say the folks at David’s Bridal, who’ve done a survey about what brides want in a proposal. Most seem to prefer something a bit more intimate when dealing with such a life-altering question -- 57% would say no to a flash-mob proposal, 63 % would cringe if the question popped up on a Jumbotron and 80% do not want to be asked on Facebook.

And how about that engagement ring that Kardashian has been flaunting on Instagram? More than half the brides surveyed would like to change something about the ring. On the other hand, what they’d most like to do is swap out a smaller diamond for a larger one, so West may have scored pretty well with this one.

But whether West ends up as a prince or a frog may mostly depend on what happens between now and the wedding day. Eighty-three percent of grooms are actively involved in wedding planning -- and since he’s already shown he likes to be in control (remember when he revised Kardashian’s wardrobe?), we’re pretty sure he’ll be one of them.

Brides report that arguments over the guest list, music selection and honeymoon can all push their fiances into groomzilla territory.

Somehow, it’s hard to imagine West not being a groomzilla. But I’m pretty sure we’ll see it all play out on TV.
