2015 CFDA Fashion Award honorees to include Instagram
The Council of Fashion Designers of America announced this year’s nominees for CFDA Fashion Awards in six categories in New York City on Monday night, and the list includes a lot of familiar names from past years including repeat nominations by 2014 winners in the top three categories. The categories and nominees are as follows:
Womenswear Designer of the Year: Joseph Altuzarra for Altuzarra (who won in this category last year), Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough for Proenza Schouler and Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen for The Row.
Menswear Designer of the Year: Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne for Public School (2014 winners of the award), David Neville and Marcus Wainwright for Rag & Bone, Thom Browne, Tim Coppens and Tom Ford.
Accessory Designer of the Year: Alexander Wang, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez for Proenza Schouler, Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen for The Row (the 2014 winners in this category), Tabitha Simmons and L.A.-based Irene Neuwirth -- who took home the Swarovski Award for Accessory Design last year.
Swarovski Award for Womenswear: Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne for Public School, Rosie Assoulin and Ryan Roche.
Swarovski Award for Menswear: Shayne Oliver for Hood by Air, Alex Orley, Matthew Orley and Samantha Orley for Orley, and Ariel and Shimon Ovadia for Ovadia & Sons.
Swarovski Award for Accessory Design: Paul Andrew, Eva Zuckerman for Eva Fehren, and Rachel Mansur and Floriana Gavriel for Mansur Gavriel.
The winners in each of the above categories will be announced June 1 at Alice Tully Hall in New York City, during a ceremony that will also bestow a handful of honorary awards including the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award (to designer Betsey Johnson), the Founders Award (to J. Crew Chairman and CEO Mickey Drexler) and the International Award (to Valentino’s Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli).
Perhaps the most interesting of this year’s honorary recognitions is the CFDA’s pick to receive the 2015 Media Award. Given in honor of journalist Eugenia Sheppard, who covered the fashion beat during her time at the New York Herald Tribune, it’s traditionally been awarded to a specific person (or persons as in 2012 honorees Scott Schuman and Garance Dore). This year’s recipient will be the 4-1/2-year-old Facebook-owned photo-sharing site Instagram.
While that certainly doesn’t bode well for the power of the printed word in fashion coverage, the upside is we can all expect plenty of photos from the awards ceremony to be posted online -- as it’s happening.
