World Series finale scores grand slam ratings for Fox
The Boston Red Sox were not the only winners when they triumphed over the St. Louis Cardinals in Wednesday’s Game 6 of the World Series to score baseball’s biggest prize and the world champion crown.
The other big winner was Fox, which broadcast the Fall Classic.
The finale pulled in 19.2 million viewers, registering as the highest-rated baseball game since Game 7 of the 2011 World Series.
The audience for the game, which will be remembered as the moment when the Red Sox won the series for the first time in 95 years, far surpassed the massive viewing average of 14.4 million total viewers that tuned on the previous showdown Monday. That game in turn crunched the audience of 10.8 million that turned in to ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.â€
PHOTOS: Cable versus broadcast ratings
It needs to be pointed out that the game faced no other football competition. The most potent viewing rivalries were NBA games on various cable channels as several top teams, including the world champion Miami Heat, are playing in the first games of the season.
Still, the popularity of this year’s match-up between the Red Sox and the Cardinals also stands in sharp contrast to last year’s series between the San Francisco Giants and the Detroit Tigers, which generated some of the lowest World Series ratings in history.
The first five games of this World Series averaged 14.1 million, a boost of 11% over last year. It is also up about the same percentage on the valued demographic of adults 18 to 49.
