TCA press tour: ‘The Goldbergs’ brings a ‘Wonder Years’ vibe to ABC

Adam F. Goldberg probably had no idea during the 1980s when he was a nosy kid filming his outrageous family with a bulky video camera that he was collecting material that would form the basis for a network TV show.

Funny how life works out.

Goldberg’s adolescence is the inspiration for “The Goldbergs,� a new ABC comedy. He digitized 100 videos that he made of his family and used them as the pitch for his show.

The story is narrated in “The Wonder Years� style by the adult Adam as he looks back on growing up in the 1980s, when he was a 11-year-old budding director always carrying around a camera and filming his high-strung family. Patton Oswalt provides the narrating voice.

The geeky Adam (Sean Giambrone) deals with the craziness of his family, including his overbearing, overprotective mother, Beverly (Wendi McClendon-Covey); his hot-tempered father, Murray (Jeff Garlin); and his siblings. Also in the mix is the family’s beloved grandfather Al “Pops� Solomon (George Segal), a shamless ladies’ man who tutors Adam in the ways of love.

Goldberg said his real-life family was thrilled with the show. “They think it’s a nice homage. My mom is very excited. She feels it validates everything she ever did.�
