Ryan Seacrest to produce ‘Superstar Showdown’ for Telemundo
Reality singing competitions have been very good to Ryan Seacrest, so it’s no surprise that the longtime host of “American Idol†is seeking to produce another one for the ever-growing Spanish-speaking market on Telemundo.
The new series, announced Sunday by Telemundo, is called “Superstar Showdown.†Instead of a panel of judges annointing a new would-be superstar from a field of unknowns, this series will pit well-known singers against each other in a series of competitions, including sing-offs.
There’s no premiere date set for the new series and no superstar talent announced yet. The expectation is that Seacrest, with his omnipresence on multiple outlets, will be able to attract some names to do singing battle against one another.

Additionally, the channel, which is second to competitor Univision in audience size, announced five new telenovelas, a daily gossip and celebrity chat show, and “Entre Grandes y Chicos,†a game show that features adults reversing roles with children as they compete for prizes.
Seacrest’s new producing venture comes as his decade-old home at “American Idol†is undergoing a bit of upheaval. Randy Jackson, the only judge who had been with the show since the beginning, elected to leave the show next year. And while Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly said that the show’s judges were welcome back next season, they were absent from the show’s Upfront presentation on Monday. Host Seacrest was the only representative.
Seacrest’s production company is also behind the new comedy series “Mixology,†which was just announced as a series by ABC.
