HBO gives title, premiere date to John Oliver’s new show
John Oliver admirers, take note: HBO has finally confirmed the title and launch date of the former “Daily Show†correspondent’s new show.
“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver†will make its debut April 27 at 11 p.m. PDT. The series, which was announced last November, takes a satirical look at the week in news -- sort of similar to the mimicking his former boss Jon Stewart is known for, but not exactly, Oliver stressed when addressing reporters in January at the Television Critics Assn.
“It will be making fun of things,†he said. “... I am different, so we’ll be approaching things in a different way.†He also noted that, as a weekly show, “we can look backwards and forward at the same time. We’ll have a chance to take one step back, and I hope we’ll make a virtue of that.â€

The British comedian had worked on “The Daily Show,†starting in 2006, as a writer and a presenter and last summer guest-hosted for Stewart (who was directing his first feature film) to mostly positive reviews.
He wrapped up his tenure on the Comedy Central staple in December with some tears shed. But in January, Oliver seemed enthusiastic about the new, less-restrictive environment that HBO offers.
“HBO is almost objectively the best sandbox you could possibly play in,†he said.
