Disney orders ‘Boy Meets World’ sequel to series; first look photos
Disney Channel has ordered its “Boy Meets Girl†reboot “Girl Meets World†to series.
It’s a historic occasion that might only be matched by the Season 3 opener of the original ABC comedy that saw Cory finally confess his love for Topanga.
When news first spread last fall that Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel, who played the central couple in the ‘90s TGIF sitcom, would reprise their roles as Cory and Topanga in a sequel to the popular sitcom for the Disney Channel, the Internet exploded. And that was when the show was just in the pilot stages!
So, Internet, prepare for Round 2.
“Girl Meets World,†from executive producer Michael Jacobs (the same guy behind “Boy Meets Worldâ€), promises to carry on the tradition of “Boy Meets World†to a new generation of fans ... only from a tween girl’s perspective this go-round. (Check out the photos for a first look at what to expect.)
Rowan Blanchard (“Spy Kids: All the Time in World in 4Dâ€), 11, takes center stage as the titular girl (a.k.a. Cory and Topanga’s daughter) -- Riley Matthews, who’s embarking on middle-school experience in New York City. And, hey, what would the show be without some friends? Sabrina Carpenter will play sidekick Maya. And, double hey, what would the show be without parents getting in the way? Cory just happens to be their new history teacher (a Mr. Feeny in the making?) and Topanga owns a hip after school hangout that specializes in ... pudding.

“‘Boy Meets World’ and its story of adolescent self-discovery resonated with an entire generation of tweens,†read a statement from Adam Bonnett, executive vice president of original programming for Disney Channels Worldwide. “In the same way audiences fell in love with Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence, we look forward to introducing our viewers to their daughter Riley Matthews in ‘Girl Meets World’ and building a memorable connection with a whole new generation of fans.â€
Production on the multi-camera series will start this summer in Los Angeles, with episodes expected to roll out in 2014.
