People, people, a “Friends†reunion is “not gonna happen,†an amused Courteney Cox told David Letterman during an appearance on “Late Show†on Monday night.

It doesn’t matter that the 1990s sitcom, which ran for 10 seasons, went off the air 10 years ago. “Friends†fans are of the fervent variety, and they just can’t let go of the idea of seeing their beloved cast all together again.

That won’t happen, said Cox, because she can’t even get a reunion dinner party together with all six friends at her own home. (In case you’ve been living in a closet for the last two decades, that’s Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer.)

“I’ve been trying to put together a cast dinner for 10 years,†she said. “I can get the girls to come, maybe Matthew Perry, Matt Le Blanc canceled last time, right at the last minute, Schwimmer lives here.â€

Also, she can’t say she’d like it to happen because then everybody will say, “Oh, Courteney wants it to happen,†and they’ll contact all the other cast members to try to make it happen. And Cox made it clear that she doesn’t want to be the one responsible for that kind of tumult.

Plus, the whole show basically took place on a soundstage in Monica’s apartment, so what do people expect them to do, Cox asked.

For now the best “Friends†reunion fans can have is found on DVD.
