CNN’s chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, has long been skeptical about the medical benefits of marijuana. But now he’s got a documentary set to air on the news network called “Weed†and he’s announcing that he’s changed his tune.

That’s not to say that we should start calling him Dr. “Feelgood,†but he is publicly apologizing for his previous opposition to the legalization of medical marijuana.

In an essay titled “Why I Changed My Mind on Weed,†written for CNN’s website, Gupta cops to relying on mainstream research and not digging deep enough into the issue.

“I didn’t look far enough,†he writes. “I didn’t review papers from smaller labs in other countries doing some remarkable research, and I was too dismissive of the loud chorus of legitimate patients whose symptoms improved on cannabis.â€

After some firsthand experience with patients benefiting from their pot use, Gupta has come to the realization that we, as a nation, need to reconsider our views.

“We have been terribly and systematically misled for nearly 70 years in the United States, and I apologize for my own role in that,†he writes.

In “Weed,†Gupta travels around the globe, getting insight into the truth about the benefits or harms of medical marijuana.

The documentary is scheduled to air on CNN on Sunday.
