The “Breaking Bad†spinoff broke very well indeed: The premiere of “Better Call Saul†walked away with cable ratings records for AMC on Sunday.

An average of 6.9 million total viewers tuned in to “Saul,†according to Nielsen. That audience skewed young, with 4.4 million viewers ages 18 to 49 making “Saul†the best-performing series premiere among that demographic in cable history.

A spinoff and prequel to the acclaimed meth drama “Breaking Bad,†“Saul†stars Bob Odenkirk as sleazy lawyer Jimmy McGill (later known as Saul Goodman) and was co-created by Vince Gilligan, the mastermind behind “Breaking Bad.â€

At least some of “Saul’s†success was due to scheduling. It aired right after the Season 5 midseason premiere of the zombie smash “The Walking Dead,†which drew a gigantic audience of 15.6 million total viewers.

The second episode of “Saul’s†two-part premiere is scheduled for Monday night.
