Because there is no such thing as too much true-crime programming, especially when O.J. Simpson is involved, Denise Brown, sister of the late Nicole Brown Simpson, is developing an unscripted true-crime series with Peacock Productions, a division of NBC News.
In the series, “Brown and a team of experts will investigate all sides of the story in cases where justice has been called into question,” according to a release from NBC News.
“Denise has experienced first-hand the complexities of the criminal justice system,” noted Melody Shafir, vice president of development for Peacock Productions, in the statement. Brown testified against her former brother-in-law at his trial in 1995, recounting incidents in which she said O.J. Simpson had been verbally and physically abusive to his ex-wife, and she has since been involved in advocacy on behalf of domestic violence victims.
Peacock Productions is a division of NBC News that produces unscripted series and specials for a variety of networks, including the true crime-oriented Investigation Discovery, which is currently producing a six-part series that will make the case for Simpson’s innocence.
A spokesperson for Peacock said the company is currently in talks with several networks regarding the series.
The news arrives amid a revival of interest in the notorious 1994 murder and ensuing trial sparked by the acclaimed FX miniseries “The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.” ESPN’s nearly eight-hour docuseries, “O.J.: Made in America” premieres June 11 and is already receiving ecstatic reviews. The Esquire Network also re-broadcast 12 hours of the trial in April.
The success of non-O.J. true-crime series such as Netflix’s “Making a Murderer” and HBO’s “The Jinx” have also contributed to TV’s true-crime trend. NBC is planning a “Law & Order” anthology series that will dramatize real-life cases, beginning with the Menendez brothers. Meanwhile CBS is developing an unscripted look at the JonBenet Ramsey killing.
