‘Westworld’ renewed for a second season along with several other HBO, CBS and Amazon shows
Monday morning brought good news for a number of new television series on various networks.
CBS announced that it was giving full-season orders to the new sitcoms “Man With a Plan†and “The Great Indoors,†which means five of the network’s newcomers will endure through the fall.
“The Great Indoors†stars Joel McHale in a workplace comedy that mines the generational divide between Generation X and millennials, and “Man With a Plan†marked the much-publicized return of Matt LeBlanc from “Friends†to a network sitcom. Both shows debuted in late October and have earned respectable ratings. “The Great Indoors†was touted by CBS as the No. 2 new comedy of the season, averaging more than 8 million viewers.
The new CBS shows “Bull,†“MacGyver†and “Kevin Can Wait,†which stars Kevin James in the season’s top-rated new sitcom, were also given full orders by the network early in the fall.
The network also ordered three additional episodes of the medical drama “Code Black,†which is in its second season.
HBO announced Monday that it was renewing its three fall series for second seasons.
“Westworld,†a futuristic drama that explores sin and the complexities of consciousness, has proved a ratings hit for HBO, averaging a gross audience of 11.7 million viewers through its first seven episodes.
The renewal also includes critically acclaimed comedy series “Insecure.†Created by and starring Issa Rae, “Insecure†examines the difficulties of navigating the modern world as a young black woman.
Also scoring a second season is “Divorce,†the series that brought “Sex and the City†star Sarah Jessica Parker back to the network and digs into a marriage as it falls apart.
Completing the renewal trifecta was Amazon, which announced Monday a second season renewal for Tig Notaro’s semi-autobiographical series “One Mississippi,†a dark comedy about the intricacies of family and making peace with the past.
The second season of “One Mississippi†will air exclusively on Amazon in 2017.
