Tinashe releases lo-fi ‘Bet’ video, announces new album ‘Joyride’

“I won’t be ignored,” Tinashe declares toward the end of a trailer previewing her sophomore album, “Joyride.”

In the clip, released Wednesday, the rising R&B singer teases the record amid a desert backdrop and trippy visuals.

Expected to be released in the fall – the first single is due imminently – the new album features work by the singer, Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Hit-Boy, Boi-1da, Diplo and Dev Hynes. “Inspiring, exciting, dangerous, adventurous [and] explosive,” is how she described the new album to Rolling Stone.

The album is the follow-up to her stellar major label debut (2014’s “Aquarius”) and a seven-song mixtape released as a free download earlier this year, “Amethyst.”

To mark the new album, the singer released “Bet,” the latest in a string of left-field visuals that accompanied her 2014 release. In the lo-fi, Stephen Garnett-directed clip, Tinashe alternates between bending and stretching her body and moving through jerky choreography inside a downtown Los Angeles tunnel. The visual also incorporates a portion of woozy “Aquarius” highlight “Feels Like Vegas.”

Built around flickering synths and future-R&B production, “Aquarius” was one of the more inventive R&B debuts in years. Unfolding over minimalist down-tempo beats and breathy rhythms steered by Tinashe’s sultry vocals, the album made good on years of underground movement from the La Crescenta-raised singer.

After spending her childhood as an actor along with a stint in a teen-pop girl group – even opening for Justin Bieber at the height of Biebermania -- Tinashe began recording in a bare-bones studio set up in her bedroom.

A string of self-recorded mixtapes earned a cult following while reinventing her as an alt-R&B siren. She continued an indie, DIY astethic for her major label debut, which spawned club bangers “2 On” and “All Hands On Deck.”
