The Weeknd, ScHoolboy Q to play Hollywood Bowl
The Weeknd’s recent shows have to tried to make spectacle out of haunting R&B minimalism. Now he’ll have a much bigger stage to try it on.
The Toronto-based project of Abel Tesfaye announced a headlining show at the Hollywood Bowl on Oct. 9. The outfit will be joined by a couple of like-minded rising acts pursuing the eerier ends of R&B and hip-hop: L.A.’s own ScHoolboy Q and the singer Jhene Aiko. Tickets go on sale Friday.
The bill pairs two chart-dominating acts who spin ruminative tales of drugs, regret and nihilism over progressive and minor-key arrangements.
The Weeknd’s latest album, 2013’s “Kiss Land,†moved him out of his semi-anonymous mixtape release schedule and into the major-label spotlight. ScHoolboy Q’s debut for interscope, “Oxymoron,†led the Billboard album charts and cemented him as Top Dawg Entertainment’s next major star.
Aiko, the relatively more optimistic opener, nonelethess has a lilting voice and sensuality onstage that fits right in the the Weend’s gauzy after-hours moods.
Tesfaye’s output has been a bit slower since “Kiss Land,†though he did just release a new single, “Often,†tied to this brief tour.
Is more new music from a much-anticipated follow-up awaiting fans at the Bowl? One never knows with the Weeknd, but he always finds ways to cut through the fog.
