Sam Smith cancels more shows to have cord surgery

The show won’t go on for Sam Smith, at least for now.

After recently canceling a string of dates due to a hemorrhage in his vocal cords, the Grammy-winning breakout announced Thursday that the illness will force him to not only miss more shows but require surgery.

A “gutted” Smith told fans in a statement that his operation is booked for next week, and doctors said he will be out of commission for the next six to eight weeks and can’t even speak for three weeks after the operation.

Between festival dates -- including the upcoming Rock in Rio USA in Las Vegas -- and his ongoing headlining tour in support of his debut “In the Lonely Hour,” the British pop-soul sensation has dozens of shows planned through summer.

Smith was previously forced to cancel several dates in Australia, and earlier this week scheduled gigs in Japan and Manila had to be axed.

Due to the surgery, he will miss his slot at the Hangout Festival in Alabama and Rock in Rio USA in Las Vegas, May 15 and 16 respectively. Neither festival has announced plans to replace Smith. Concert dates in Paris and Monaco have also been canceled.

“I’m so gutted to be missing all the shows and events I was meant to be playing at,” Smith wrote in the statement posted on his Instagram early Thursday. “I cannot wait to sing for you all soon.”
