Listen to the Rolling Stones’ new acoustic version of ‘Wild Horses’
You already knew the Stones were hitting the road to celebrate the reissue of 1972’s “Sticky Fingers.” Now you can hear a remaster of the acoustic version of “Wild Horses.” It’s the best new old song this year.
The band posted the charming lyric video for “Wild Horses,” which features a series of stop-motion zippers and cave paintings, on Tuesday. The song is one of the most beloved in the Stones’ canon, and an indispensable document of classic rock and roll. The new remaster and arrangement puts it in a whole new context: Now it’s even more tender, emotionally bare and Mick’s vocals are given a new clarity and intimacy.
More poignantly, the song takes on an even more haunted feeling, given that it comes in the wake of the deaths of both Jagger’s girlfriend L’Wren Scott and the band’s longtime saxophonist Bobby Keys.
That said, there are few, if any, less Stones-y places to hear this than on Spotify at work. There must be a smoky basement or the back of an El Camino somewhere that you can sink into this song, to properly hear the intergenerational sense of loss embedded in it.
The songs is available to download now if you pre-order the “Sticky Fingers” reissue on a variety of services like iTunes, and the single is streaming on Spotify. The album is out May 26. Still no L.A. date for the tour.
