Nine Inch Nails released a new single, “Came Back Haunted,†late Wednesday evening, ending a hiatus that began after the influential industrial-rock group’s Wave Goodbye Tour in 2009.

The song, which you can hear below, is the first sampling from a studio album, “Hesitation Marks,†to be released Sept. 3 by Columbia Records. Co-produced by frontman Trent Reznor along with Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder, the disc will serve as Nine Inch Nails’ follow-up to 2008’s “The Slip.â€

Last month Reznor wrote on Tumblr that he’d been “less than honest about what I’ve really been up to lately†and revealed that he’d finished a Nine Inch Nails album, which he called “the real impetus and motivation behind the decision to assemble a new band and tour again.â€

The tour, called Tension 2013, will stop at L.A.’s Staples Center on Nov. 8 with support from Explosions in the Sky. (Godspeed You! Black Emperor is to open other shows on the trek.)

“Tension picks up where Lights in the Sky left off,†Reznor said in a statement, referring to the band’s 2008 tour. “This is the full-on NIN live experience realized as we never could before.â€
