Kelly Clarkson tops Billboard album chart with ‘Piece by Piece’
“I’m in a really, really great place,” Kelly Clarkson told me recently, and though she was referring to her family situation -- as a wife and new mother -- the singer might’ve been anticipating her position on Billboard’s album chart.
“Piece by Piece,” Clarkson’s latest set of uplifting pop songs, entered the Billboard 200 at No. 1 on Wednesday, reflecting sales and streams that equaled 97,000 units, according to Nielsen Music.
It’s the former “American Idol” champion’s third chart-topper, following “All I Ever Wanted” in 2009 and her post-”Idol” debut, 2003’s “Thankful.” That puts Clarkson in the company of Carrie Underwood, as Billboard’s Keith Caulfield points out, for the most No. 1 albums by an “Idol” alum.
Behind Clarkson on this week’s chart, the “Fifty Shades of Grey” soundtrack came in at No. 2, Taylor Swift’s “1989” finished at No. 3 and Drake’s “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” held at No. 4, while Ed Sheeran’s “X” rounded out of the top 5.
Last week’s No. 1 album, “Dark Sky Paradise” by Big Sean, fell to No. 6.
