Jazz picks: Herbie Hancock at Disney Hall, ERIMAJ and more
A selection of upcoming jazz and jazz-adjacent shows heading into this weekend.
Dawn of Midi with Oneohtrix Point Never at Echoplex
How, exactly, does one define Dawn of Midi? Composed of bassist Aakaash Israni, drummer Qasim Naqvi and pianist Amino Belyamani with roots in the fertile music program at CalArts, the telepathic piano trio’s ever-evolving, 47-minute song on its brilliant 2013 album “Dysnomia†splits the difference between jazz, electronic music and minimalist composition. The trio opens for the similarly spellbinding electronic detours of Daniel Lopatin, better known by his acclaimed if more inscrutable project, Oneohtrix Point Never. Echoplex, 1822 Sunset Blvd., L.A. Fri., 8:30 p.m. $16. https://www.theecho.com.
ERIMAJ at the Blue Whale
One of the most gifted and in-demand young jazz drummers working today, Jamire Williams flexes an eclectic and rewardingly genre-blind eye for melody on his 2012 solo album (recorded under the inverse of his first name), “Conflict of a Man.â€
CRITICS’ PICKS: What to watch, where to go, what to eat
A blend of thick, head-bobbing grooves along with R&B-tinged keyboards and guitar, Williams’ sound continues to evolve through tributaries of instrumental hip-hop and propulsive funk on his latest recordings, including the tantalizing new track, “Angela, Our Cry.†The Blue Whale, 123 Astronaut E S Onizuka St., No. 301, L.A. Sat.-Sun., 9 p.m. $15. www.bluewhalemusic.com.
Herbie Hancock, Dianne Reeves, Christian McBride at Disney Hall
The L.A. Philharmonic celebrates the 10th anniversary of its jazz season at Walt Disney Concert Hall with a meeting of the organization’s past three creative chairs for jazz: Dianne Reeves, Christian McBride and its current chair, piano legend Herbie Hancock.
The group will be backed on drums by Harvey Mason, who, in addition to performing with the group Fourplay, also played with Hancock’s Headhunters ensemble. 111 S Grand Ave., Los Angeles. Sun., 7:30 p.m. $50.50-$130 https://www.laphil.com.
