In its second week in theaters, “Straight Outta Compton” is once again blowing away the rest of the late-summer movie pack. The Universal picture is set to surpass the $100 million mark this weekend, as the biopic about groundbreaking Compton rap act N.W.A continues to attract moviegoers and social media heat.
The film raked in an estimated $8.3 million on Friday, putting its U.S. box office total at $93 million. In addition, Universal added more than 200 screens for the weekend — “Compton” is now on view at more than 3,000 theaters — which should easily put the hip-hop movie well above $100 million by Monday. The film is projected to rake in nearly $30 million over the weekend.

In its second week, “Compton” has far better box office than a number of new films that opened this weekend. Among them: Focus Features horror flick “Sinister 2,” which came in second for Friday, with an estimated $4.7 million in box office receipts, and Fox’s “Hitman: Agent 47,” which drew $3 million.
“American Ultra,” Lionsgate’s critically panned stoner-action flick, was not well received by moviegoers. It opened with a paltry $2.1 million take, coming in at No. 6 at the Friday box office.
Tom Cruise’s franchise action movie, “Mission: Impossible — Rogue,” continues to draw audiences three weeks after its initial release. It came in at No. 3 with $3.3 million, bringing total box office for the Paramount picture to nearly $150 million.
The week’s other big franchise movie continues its prolonged wilt. Fox’s “Fantastic Four” made only $1 million on Friday, for a total box office take of $47 million.
