Marilyn Monroe: Commemorating the 51st anniversary of her death
Monday will mark the 51st anniversary of Marilyn Monroe’s death at the age of 36, and both the Hollywood Museum and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are honoring the screen icon’s legacy this weekend.
The Hollywood Museum is currently presenting “Marilyn Monroe: The Exhibit, “ which features her costumes, jewelry, furs, publicity gowns, personal wardrobe, furniture from her final home in Brentwood and even her 1961 Fleetwood Cadillac limousine. The exhibit, which continues through Sept. 8, also includes photos of Monroe taken by George Barris.
The museum has three events planned to commemorate her death. Collectors Greg Schreiner and Scott Fortner will participate in a “meet and greet†with visitors Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. On Sunday, there will be a book signing with Lois Banner, author of “Marilyn: The Passion and the Paradox,†Douglas Kirkland, author of “An Evening With Marilyn,†and James Spada, author of “Marilyn Monroe: Her Life in Pictures,†from 1 to 3 p.m.

The museum also will co-sponor the annual “Marilyn Remembered†memorial service Monday at the Westwood Mortuary, where the actress is interred.
The academy’s Oscars Outdoors screening series in Hollywood will present 1953’s “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes†on Saturday evening. The musical-comedy, directed by Howard Hawks, features Monroe purring the tune, “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.†Jane Russell and Charles Coburn also star in this classic, which solidified Monroe’s status as a superstar. The event is sold out, but there will be a standby line.
