Ewan McGregor to join ‘Beauty and the Beast’ as Lumiere

Disney’s new Lumiere has come to light. Ewan McGregor is in final negotiations to play the anthropomorphic candelabrum in director Bill Condon’s live-action remake of “Beauty and the Beast,” The Times has confirmed.
The 44-year-old Scottish actor is poised to join a star-studded cast that features Emma Watson and Dan Stevens in the title roles, along with Luke Evans as Gaston, Josh Gad as Le Fou, Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, Ian McKellen as Cogsworth and Kevin Kline as Maurice.
The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news about McGregor.
Fans of the 1991 animated musical will recall that Lumiere is the dashing maitre d’ of the Prince’s castle who is cursed by a witch and transformed into a living candleholder. He’s particularly associated with the rollicking number “Be Our Guest.”
McGregor is no stranger to singing, having put his pipes to use in Baz Luhrmann’s “Moulin Rouge” and a stage production of “Guys and Dolls.” The actor’s other recent and upcoming films include “Last Days in the Desert,” “Jane Got a Gun” and his directing debut, “American Pastoral.”
“Beauty and the Beast” will begin production next month at Shepperton Studios outside London. It’s scheduled to hit theaters March 17, 2017.
