David O. Russell named guest director of L.A. Film Festival

Oscar-nominated writer-director David O. Russell (“The Fighter,†“Silver Linings Playbookâ€) has been named guest director of the Los Angeles Film Festival, organizers announced Friday. The festival takes place June 13-23 in downtown Los Angeles.

Russell also is this year’s recipient of the Spirit of Independence Award, which recognizes an individual for their commitment to the artistic independence in film.

As guest director, Russell will host a special screening of his 1999 film “Three Kings†and discuss his work as a filmmaker. Past guest directors include Kathryn Bigelow, William Friedkin and Guillermo Del Toro.

Also returning to the festival, which is presented by Film Independent, is the Master Class series. Film Independent at LACMA curator Elvis Mitchell is scheduled to conduct a master class with actress Maya Rudolph (“Bridesmaids,†“Away We Goâ€) and composer Gustavo Santaolalla (“Brokeback Mountainâ€).

The “In Conversation†session will feature playwright-director David Mamet and actor-magician-author Ricky Jay, who will discuss their past collaborations. At “An Evening with Costa-Gavras,†the Academy Award-winning writer-director of such politically themed films as 1969’s “Z†and 1982’s “Missing†will discuss his work and screen his latest film, “Capital.â€

The 2013 Los Angeles Film Festival will screen more than 200 feature films, shorts and music videos representing more than 30 countries.

Pedro Almodovar’s “I’m So Excited†was previously announced as the festival opener.

The Los Angeles Times is the presenting media sponsor of the festival and L.A. Live is the host partner.
