Bret Easton Ellis says Kathryn Bigelow is ‘overrated’
Bret Easton Ellis, the author of the controversial “American Psycho” and other novels, has created quite an online reputation for himself with his Twitter feed, through which he has picked fights with Nikki Finke, Lindsay Lohan and now Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow.
Three years ago, Bigelow became the first woman ever to win a best director Oscar for her film “The Hurt Locker.” This year, she appears to be a contender again with her Osama bin Laden manhunt movie, “Zero Dark Thirty.”
However, Ellis doesn’t seem as enamored with Bigelow’s talents as some, tweeting on Wednesday night, “Kathryn Bigelow would be considered a mildly interesting filmmaker if she was a man but since she’s a very hot woman she’s really overrated.”
“Zero Dark Thirty” has already been named best film of 2012 both by the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle and will surely be honored by several other organizations before the awards season ends.
However, Ellis is backing the David O. Russell-directed “Silver Linings Playbook,” saying that it’s going to win the best picture Oscar.
Ellis, who also raised eyebrows last week when he sent out a bizarre 2:13 a.m. tweet that said simply, “come over at do bring coke now,” hasn’t been shy about his movie awards-season opinions.
Wednesday night, he also tweeted his views on the new film version of “Les Miserables” (as well as poking fun at his notorious coke post) by writing, “‘come over at do bring coke now...’ I should have tweeted that while sitting through Les Miserables. I might have liked it then.”
But Ellis may soon have to take it as well as he dishes it. He most recently wrote the screenplay to the thriller “The Canyons,” directed by Paul Schrader and starring Lindsay Lohan. The film will be released next year. Opinions to soon fly thick and fast.
