Lauryn Hill charged with skipping tax returns while making $1.6M+

Add singer Lauryn Hill to the list of celebrities with federal tax problems.

The Fugees member and solo artist was charged Thursday with three criminal counts of willful failure to file income tax returns in 2005, 2006 and 2007. During that period she allegedly earned more than $1.6 million, the U.S. attorney’s office said in a statement.

Hill is scheduled to appear in New Jersey District Court on June 29.

If convicted, the 37-year-old mother of six faces a maximum of one year in federal prison and a $100,000 fine on each count. (Hill has five kids with Rohan Marley, son of Bob Marley, and a sixth with another man.

Hill hit the headlines a few days back after she was invited by rapper Nas to perform with him as a last-minute replacement at the Hot 97 Summer Jam concert on Sunday. (Headliner Nicki Minaj had backed out only hours before she was scheduled to go on, after a Hot 97 radio personality insulted her track “Starships” while addressing the crowd from the festival stage.)

“I don’t have details on exactly what transpired between the station and the artists,” Hill explained later via Twitter, “but I do support artists standing by their beliefs, and walking with integrity. We have to find a better way to commercially exploit music, while giving artists their proper respect.”

That said -- Hill isn’t the only Fugee to tangle with the tax man: In 2010, Wyclef Jean was hit with $2.1 million in federal tax liens related to his tax returns filed for 2006, 2007 and 2008.
