Marion Cotillard denies rumors of involvement with Brad Pitt as ‘crafted’
In the immediate aftermath of Tuesday’s news that Angelina Jolie had filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, rumors swirled positing that Pitt had carried on an affair with Marion Cotillard, his co-star in the upcoming romantic thriller “Allied.â€
Inspired primarily by a Page Six story alleging that Jolie learned of the affair via the use of a private investigator, speculation took flight. The talk was seemingly fueled by the circumstances under which Pitt and Jolie may (or may not) have first become romantically involved, during the 2004 filming of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith, when Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston.
The rumors persisted Wednesday, despite accounts from both sides insisting that there was no outside catalyst for the split, with Jolie’s lawyer releasing a statement expressing, “This decision was made for the health of the family.â€
But Cotillard attempted to erase herself from the tabloid narrative Wednesday night all the same, with a post to her Instagram account denying the rumors as “crafted†and wishing both partners “peace.â€

Accompanying an abstract photo, the French actress posted the message in both English and French.
“This is going to be my first and only reaction to the whirlwind news that broke 24 hours ago and that I was swept up into,†Cotillard began. “I am not used to commenting on things like this nor taking them seriously but as this situation is spiraling and affecting people I love, I have to speak up.â€
Cotillard then unequivocally voices her love for longtime partner, actor and director Guillaume Canet, with whom she’s been in a relationship with since 2007.
“Firstly, many years ago, I met the man of my life, father of our son and of the baby we are expecting,†Cotillard wrote, confirming for the first time that she is pregnant. “He is my love, my best friend, the only one that I need.â€
After her declaration of love, Cotillard pivots to the rumor that precipitated her post. Or rather, she pivots to those individuals she attributes the existence of such rumors in the first place.
“Secondly to those who have indicated that I am devastated, I am very well thank you. This crafted conversation isn’t distressing,†Cotillard wrote, dismissing her involvement in the proceedings as a fiction. “And to all the media and the haters who are quick to pass judgment, I sincerely wish you a swift recovery.â€
Cotillard’s message concludes with her wishes for Pitt and Jolie alike, as they traverse this difficult time.
“Finally, I do very much wish that Angelina and Brad, both whom I deeply respect, will find peace in this very tumultuous moment,†Cotillard wrote. “With all my love Marion.â€
In the meantime, those who wish to see Cotillard and Pitt carry on in romantic fashion will have to wait until the release of “Allied,†scheduled for Nov. 23.
