Lamar Odom checks into rehab as divorce from Khloe Kardashian becomes reality
Lamar Odom has reportedly checked himself into rehab in San Diego, just days after a judge signed off on his divorce from Khloe Kardashian and a little more than a year after he nearly died from an overdose.
“It was his own decision,†a source told E! News, noting that the former Lakers and Clippers player had not fallen off the wagon. “He wanted to work on his mental and physical health for the next chapter of his life.â€
That chapter presumably started Friday when a judge finalized his and Kardashian’s three-year divorce saga. Odom will be legally solo starting Saturday, TMZ reported, for the first time since the couple got married after dating for a month in 2009. He plans an extended stay at the rehab facility, the website said.
Kardashian first filed for the split in December 2013, when Odom already had been struggling with substance abuse for a couple of years. Then in October 2015, he OD’d at a Nevada brothel after ingesting what police said was a combination of cocaine, alcohol and a Viagra-like herbal supplement.
Because their nearly-done dissolution deal was stuck awaiting a judge’s approval, Kardashian was able to make medical decisions on his behalf while he was comatose. The couple called off their divorce at the time to focus on his recovery. In May, Kardashian filed for divorce a second time.
As far as not falling off the wagon, it’s unclear when Odom actually got on the wagon.
Rehab wasn’t happening back in March when Odom was spotted ordering a handful of cocktails at an Irish pub. Odom was removed from a plane in June, drunk and vomiting, after slamming beer and whiskey in an airport lounge.
“He understands the importance of maintaining his sobriety,†E!’s source said Monday.
