Kit Harington ‘wouldn’t be happy’ about getting naked on ‘Thrones’

Kit Harington, who plays Night’s Watchman Jon Snow in HBO’s “Game of Thrones,†isn’t totally opposed to the lavish fantasy series’ frequent nudity.

“It’s only right, if you’re going to make a show where nudity and sex is a large part of it, that you be a part of that,†the 27-year-old Brit told GQ magazine, whose three April covers shot by Paola Kudacki feature a leather jacket- and faded jeans-clad Harington, “Happy†singer Pharrell Williams and “Non-Stop†star Liam Neeson.

“I wouldn’t say I’d be happy about it,†Harington said when further pressed by writer Chris Heath about doing a full-frontal nude scene himself. “I’m not saying [if I’d do it]. Because I don’t know. It would have to be ... well deserved.â€

Avid “Thrones†viewers may be furrowing their eyebrows Jon Snow-style over Harington’s musing given that his character’s backside was displayed late last season after a hot-and-heavy romp in a cave with Wildling woman Ygritte (Rose Leslie). Turns out it wasn’t his bum, it was a crew member acting as his stand-in because Harington had been nursing a broken ankle at the time.

“So the only time you saw my ass, it wasn’t my ass,†he said.

Last June, Harington spoke at length about the pivotal scene for his once-celibate character with The Times’ Hero Complex.

“It’s strange being nude in front of a whole crew full of people and trying to be very intimate,†he said shortly after the finale aired. “It’s a very surreal experience. But it was such a beautiful scene. It was one of those very happy moments that you get in this series. You don’t get many moments of tenderness.â€

Indeed, the critically acclaimed show, whose grisly “Red Wedding†shocked viewers who weren’t familiar with George R.R. Martin’s epic tale in the “Song of Ice and Fire†book series, frequently kills off characters who are trying to do good, he said. Which seemingly makes his beloved character -- the illegitimate son of the noble and late Lord Eddard Stark -- a pretty likely next victim, especially since Harington promises that the content keeps getting “darker.â€

“I think Jon Snow is one of the last bastions of a young hero who might do a good thing,†Harington said of his alter ego. “There’s a huge amount riding on him to be a leader, and I want him to become that leader. I guess for me, Jon Snow is a figure of hope within the whole thing—that he’ll continue to be this good person, and somehow the story will end well for everybody.â€

Harington, who stands at 5 foot 8 and is piled on with heavy costumes for his icy scenes, added that it took a bit of an effort to look the part of Jon Snow -- he had to grow out his hair and beard for the role that originally eyed 14-year-olds in the pilot. And now he’s contractually obligated to stay scraggly whenever he returns to filming in the latter half of the year. He usually forsakes shampoo while he’s shooting too.

“I didn’t really think I’d be a leading man in any respect whatsoever. At drama school in my third year I was resigned to the fate of being Young Male Rape Victim No. 2. That was the kind of category I was put in. I’ve got a very baby face underneath all of this fuzz,†he added.

“Game of Thrones†returns to HBO for its fourth season on April 6.
