Katy Perry tweet suggests ‘Bad Blood’ with Taylor Swift
Katy Perry just might be the “straight-up enemy†whom Taylor Swift talks about in a new interview and references in a song off her upcoming album. And if Perry isn’t, then the “Roar†singer definitely knows how to subtweet for maximum attention.
“Watch out for the Regina George in sheep’s clothing...,†Perry tweeted in the middle of the night after Swift’s Rolling Stone chat went wide on Monday.
For the uninitiated and others who’ve been dozing off since the late 2000s, subtweeting is talking about someone on Twitter without mentioning their name or handle, and Regina George is the sweet-on-the-outside, poison-on-the-inside queen of mean in “Mean Girls.†Um, “Mean Girls†is a movie? Lindsay Lohan was in it before all her drama started? Lilo didn’t play Regina George, Rachel McAdams did? Need we go on? Back to 2014.
“For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not,†Swift told the magazine about the fellow female artist who inspired “Bad Blood,†a cut from her upcoming album, “1989.†“She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ‘Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?’â€
So that sounds like the “I Knew You Were Trouble†singer cast her unnamed nemesis as a B-is-for-bad Regina George type in the first place. But the situation got worse, according to Swift.
“She did something so horrible,†the singer told the mag, referring to something that happened last year. “I was like, ‘Oh, we’re just straight-up enemies.’ And it wasn’t even about a guy! It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. And I’m surprisingly non-confrontational -- you would not believe how much I hate conflict. So now I have to avoid her. It’s awkward, and I don’t like it.â€
Now, a trio of TSwift’s dancers did up and leave her in the middle of her “Red†tour to go work for previous employer Perry on the “Prism†promo tour in late 2013. So, yeah, business.
And add to that the part that by Swift’s admission might be personal. “But I don’t think there would be any personal problem if she weren’t competitive,†she told Rolling Stone.
No secrets here: Both women of course dated singer-songwriter John Mayer, with Swift allegedly writing a song in the aftermath -- 2010’s “Dear John†-- and receiving one back from him -- “Paper Doll†-- a few years later.
Perry, on the other hand, fell hard for Mayer after her 2012 divorce from Russell Brand, went on-again-off-again with him for a while, declared her love for him publicly and then declared her respect when they finally ended it for real earlier this year.
But she did also mention there might be a song from her as well.
Mayer, incidentally, said he was pretty much OK with the musical onslaught. “I have super strength for gang-ups. I’m fine, I’m fine,†the crooner told TMZ after the latter split. “That’s what you’re supposed to do, man. You’re supposed to write songs. You’re just not supposed to tell everybody you’re doing it.â€
Or, perhaps, give interviews about it. Or, you know, subtweet.
