Drew Barrymore: Why she named baby Frankie, not Pepper or Martini

Drew Barrymore offered an explanation -- or lack of one -- for her second daughter’s masculine baby name on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.â€

The “Blended†star, who welcomed Frankie in April with husband Will Kopelman, appeared on the show with her costar, Adam Sandler, three weeks after the birth. The clip, posted online Wednesday, is set to air on May 19.

“I feel so good and happy, my kid is healthy. I have nothing to complain about. I’m so blessed,†the bubbly star said, adding that 19-month-old Olive is getting along swimmingly with her younger sister.

The 39-year-old again chose an offbeat moniker for her second child -- a decision that prompted a little elaboration from the “E.T.†alum.

“It’s hard because we love the name Olive, but what goes with Olive?†she asked DeGeneres, who promptly replied “Martinis.â€

“Every [name] started sounding like a color or a food,†Barrymore joked. “Hazel’s a great name. No, that’s two shades of green. And I love the name Pepper so much, but we were like, ‘Olive and Pepper. Like that’s two things you find in a pantry.’â€

So she and Kopelman settled on Frankie.

“It was just a name that came to my husband and I a few months before she was born, and we were sort of like, ‘I think this is it,’†she said. “And then we gave ourselves the room to change our mind, but we never did. Not the most interesting story.â€

So, in an effort to make the story better, she said that her mother-in-law’s maiden name is Franco.

“I love her so much that it reminds me of her as well,†she added.

Barrymore previously told DeGeneres that they chose their firstborn’s name because a book she was reading three months into her pregnancy said that her child was the size of the fruit at the time.

“That was it. We never looked back,†she said.

Hey, it could have been “kidney bean†instead.
