Carrie Underwood dishes on her marriage to Mike Fisher

Carrie Underwood may not see her hockey-playing husband as often as she’d like, but she’s still gushing about their “sweet and sexy†wedded bliss.

“You see each other when you can and you talk to each other as much as you can,†the singer told People, whose cover she graces this week. “You just have to commit and make it work.â€

She and Mike Fisher married in July 2010 but are still juggling their busy schedules despite him moving from Canada to Tennessee to be closer to his wife. In February 2011, Fisher was traded from the Ottawa Senators (after an 11-season career) to the Nashville Predators. Nashville also happens to be the country music capital of the world.

“She was emotional,†Fisher told USA Today of Underwood’s reaction to the trade at the time. “Obviously, she is excited, but she knows there is different emotions for me... Leaving a place that you loved is very hard.â€

Some outlets blamed Underwood for the move. The Tennessean newspaper’s headline for the trade said that the team had acquired “Carrie Underwood’s husband†rather than a respected two-way center, Canadian radio stations jokingly “banned†the singer’s music, and the trade was considered “the day country music killed hockey.†She was also referred to on Twitter as the Yoko Ono of the NHL.

Those remarks aside, Underwood said she and Fisher had a fairly traditional courtship that came “easy†to the “American Idol†alum, who won the competition eight years ago.

“I’ve never considered myself the crazy girlfriend type. But there have been a couple of guys who made me crazy, and it’s just because I didn’t trust them. With Mike, everything was just so easy,†she told People.

Even their first dates were easy, said the mostly vegan Underwood. “Our place†was Subway, she said, where she can get “the Veggie Delight and he can get his footlong. Even when he’s like, ‘I’m so out of shape,’ he still has a six-pack.â€

The coupling of a bestselling singer and a professional athlete has clamped down on their quality time, but she says they still make an effort to stay close and see each other as often as they can.

“You just have to make that your number one priority,†the country crooner told the mag backstage at “American Idol†on Thursday. The story said that she hadn’t seen her husband, who now plays for the Nashville Predators, in a week.

The 30-year-old has said she’d quit her career if her husband, 32, ever told her to -- a notion that had quite a few people shaking in their cowboy boots.

“If Mike ever told me he needed me to quit, I’d quit,†she said. “When you make that promise to somebody, and you stand before God and your family and friends, you’ve got to do everything that you possibly can to make that work.â€

But she clarified that her remarks didn’t mean she’d be retiring anytime soon.

“I feel like everyone’s afraid he’s going to make me quit my job and that’s not quite what we were saying!†said Underwood, who added in the cover story that her husband “completely supports me in [my career], as I do him.â€

But Underwood still sees having a family in her future, though she isn’t rushing to conceive anytime soon. Having a baby will “just happen when it happens,†she said.
