The catch-all tropical Latin album category is one of the fuzziest, encompassing everything from salsa and cumbia to bachata, reggaeton and merengue. But there’s nothing vague or soft-edged about this year’s winner, Marlow Rosado y La Riqueña, who won the award with his album “Retro” (Pink Chaos Productions).

The salsero, whose collaborators have included Celia Cruz and Marc Anthony, lined up an impressive group of artistic cohorts for “Retro,” among them León Cheva and Tito Puente Jr.
The Puerto Rico-born, Miami-based artist has said in interviews that he gave up a secure teaching job with the Dade County public school district to pursue his musical destiny. He has been involved in more than 60 recordings and professes to dig serial Modernists such as John Cage and Philip Glass.
