‘Broken’ tops British Independent Film Awards nominations

The drama “Broken†led the way Monday with nine nominations for the British Independent Film Awards, including best film. Rufus Norris was nominated in the debut director and director categories. Also nominated were Tim Roth as lead actor and Cillian Murphy and Rory Kinnear as supporting actor. Ben Wheatley’s “Sightseers†and Peter Strickland’s “Berberian Sound Studio†earned seven nominations each.

Joining those three titles in the category of best film are “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel†and “The Imposter.â€

Besides Norris, the nominees for best director are Wheatley, Strickland, John Madden for “Exotic Marigold†and Bart Layton for “The Imposter.â€

Lead actress nominees are Alice Lowe for “The Sightseers,†Andrea Riseborough for “Shadow Dancers,†Elle Fanning for “Ginger & Rosa,†Judi Dench for “Best Exotic Marigold Hotel†and Meryl Steep for “The Iron Lady.â€

Vying with Roth for lead actor are Riz Ahmed for “Ill Manors,†Steve Oram for “Sightseers,†Terence Stamp for “Song for Marion†and Toby Jones for “Berberian Sound Studio.â€

The Moet British Independent Film Awards will be handed out in London on Dec. 9
