New York, New Jersey public TV stations to air Sandy relief concert

The three public television stations that serve the New York-New Jersey region got the greenlight from the Federal Communications Commission to broadcast Wednesday’s “12-12-12,” which is the concert that Cablevision President Jim Dolan, the Weinstein Co. chief Harvey Weinstein and Clear Channel executive John Sykes are putting together to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Sandy.
Because this is a fundraising event, the noncommercial stations needed permission from the government to telecast it as public TV stations are prohibited from raising funds for organizations other than themselves.
“The opportunity to broadcast this incredible concert and raise funds for victims of this storm was something we had to seize,” said Neal Shapiro, president of WNET-TV New York, which operates channel 13 as well public TV stations WLIW-TV New York and NJTV, New Jersey’s public broadcasting network.
Performers for the benefit include the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, the Who, Alicia Keys and Kanye West. It is being carried by dozens of networks including HBO and AMC.
