‘Despicable Me 2,’ ‘Fast & Furious 6’ top DVD sales chart

The sixth movie in the “Fast & Furious†series burned rubber in the home video market, but it couldn’t top the minions of “Despicable Me 2.â€

The computer animated family comedy, the sequel to 2010’s “Despicable Me†featuring the voices of Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig, was the top-selling DVD and Blu-ray title in its first week in release.

That comes as no surprise after its distributor, Universal Pictures, said last week that it generated $80 million worth of DVDs, Blu-ray discs and digital copies.

Marketing leading up to the release capitalized on the holiday season and included a float in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and minion-themed trucks that visited cities to pump up interest by distributing prizes and starting flash mobs.

“Fast & Furious 6,†the action film that stars Vin Diesel and the late Paul Walker, came in second place. Universal Pictures also distributed “Fast & Furious 6.â€

The latest installment in the X-Men saga, “The Wolverine,†dropped to No. 3 after topping the list last week.

Warner Bros.’ Superman movie “Man of Steel†was the top rental.

Here are the Rentrak rankings for the week that ended Dec. 14 for sales and Dec. 15 for rentals.
