Classic Hollywood: Streaming services with classics on the menu
Here’s a look at select streaming services’ vintage offerings:
Acorn TV (acorn.tv): The site specializes in British television. Among its classic offerings are “I, Claudius,†“Poldark†and “Brideshead Revisited.â€
Amazon Instant Video (https://www.amazon.com “I Love Lucy†and “Bonanza†are featured on the site as well as the 1968 film “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang†and 1982’s “Tootsie.â€
CBS.com (www.cbs.com): It shows not only new series but also vintage series such as “I Love Lucy,†the original “Hawaii Five-O,†“Perry Mason,†“The Twilight Zone,†“The Odd Couple†and various “Star Trek†series.
Fandor (www.fandor.com): The site that specializes in classic, art house, indie and experimental films has classics from the Criterion Collection. Vintage titles include 1963’s “Charade,†1937’s “Nothing Sacred†and 1959’s “House on Haunted Hill.â€
Feeln (www.feeln.com): The family-friendly service features “The Hallmark Hall of Fame†movies as well as such vintage flicks as 1973’s “The Sting,†1982’s “Annie†and 1993’s “Sleepless in Seattle.†TV fare includes Ken Burns’ 1994 “Baseball†documentary series.
Hulu (www.hulu.com): “The Twilight Zone,†“Green Acres,†“The Lone Ranger†and “You Bet Your Life†are among the classic TV series on the streaming service, which is adding “Seinfeld†on Wednesday. The site also features films from the Criterion Collection, including the 1964 Beatles musical “A Hard Day’s Night,†Jean Cocteau’s 1946 “Beauty and the Beast†and the 1939 John Ford western “Stagecoach.â€
MUBI (www.mubi.com): The site, which features a new film every day, is showing Charlie Chaplin’s 1917 shorts “The Adventurer†and “Easy Street†as well as John Cassavetes’ 1976 “Mikey and Nicky.â€
Netflix (ww.netflix.com): The streaming service recently added “Friends†to its TV lineup. Other vintage titles include “Ally McBeal†and “Twin Peaks.†Classic film offerings include 1950’s “All About Eve,†1953’s “Roman Holiday,†1974’s “Chinatown,†1978’s “Grease†and 1986’s “Stand by Me.â€
Turner Classic Movies (www.tcm.com/watchtcm): The channel’s Watch TCM site allows fans to watch the live feed as well as select films that air on the movie channel. However, not all cable and satellite services provide this feature.
