Liza Minnelli to debut in ‘Smash’ on NBC
The legendary Liza Minnelli epitomizes Broadway flash and pop – and now she’ll sing and dance her way across the small screen in “Smash.â€
NBC announced Tuesday that Minnelli -- already a Tony, Oscar, Emmy, Golden Globe and Grammy winner –- will appear as herself in an episode of “Smash.†The show returns for a second season in early February. Minnelli’s episode, “The Surprise Party,†will air later in the spring.
Minnelli, daughter of actress Judy Garland and film director Vincente Minnelli, will sing an original song in her “Smash†debut with Christian Borle (who plays Tom on the show).
The iconic performer played Sally Bowles in the 1972 film adaptation of Broadway’s “Cabaretâ€; the role earned her an Academy Award for best actress.
In a statement, NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt called Minnelli “the essence of a multi-talented, singular show business sensation, particularly for her extraordinary contributions to Broadway.â€
“What could be more fitting than to have her legendary talent on a show that celebrates a world Liza has dazzled for decades?†Greenblatt said. “I had the pleasure of working with Liza when we restored her landmark television special ‘Liza With a Z’ at Showtime, and to see her artistry up close and personal is a thing to behold.â€
