Pacific Symphony’s new Wavelength Fest will meld classical and pop
Singer-songwriter Bonnie Raitt will be among the artists joining the Pacific Symphony this summer in a new series intended to bridge the symphony’s regular crowd with non-classical audiences.
The series, titled the Wavelength Festival of Music, is scheduled for Aug. 22-25 at the Pacific Amphitheatre at the OC Fair & Event Center. The shows will begin shortly after the OC Fair ends.
“The idea for Wavelength sprang from a desire to serve Orange County and the region with a new and distinct popular music experience which demonstrates the versatility of the musicians to collaborate with a wide range of artists,†Pacific Symphony President John Forsyte said in a statement.
“Through a long-standing relationship with Steve Beazley, former CEO of the Fair, I have come to learn about the exciting developments at the OC Fair and Pacific Amphitheatre. It’s a great venue for live music.â€
On the schedule are Raitt, who will perform with her band and no symphony accompaniment Aug. 22, and the Los Angeles-based rock band the Airborne Toxic Event, which will perform with the full symphony Aug. 23. The band Delta Spirit will open the latter show.
KCRW music director Jason Bentley will curate the Aug. 24 program, for which the lineup is not yet finalized. Ashley Eckenweiler, a spokeswoman for the series, said the concert will be an “electronic-focused†show with some contributions from symphony members.
The entire symphony will be on hand for the Aug. 25 show, playing alongside the Pink Floyd tribute band Windborne.

Tickets for the Aug. 22, 23 and 25 shows, which range in price from $25 to $95, are set to go on sale through Ticketmaster at 10 a.m. on May 15. Since the final lineup has not been announced for Aug. 24, tickets for that show will go on sale at a later date, Eckenweiler said.
