Early Beatles photographs by Astrid Kirchherr getting L.A. show
A collection of early photographs of the Beatles taken by Astrid Kirchherr will go on display in a West Hollywood gallery starting in September.
“The Early Beatles Collection,†scheduled to run at the Leica Gallery from Sept. 7 to Oct. 19, will feature images Kirchherr took during the filming of “A Hard Day’s Night†in 1964 for Stern Magazine, as well as some of the images she took of the musicians during their Hamburg, Germany, period in 1960.

Kirchherr is a German photographer who followed the Beatles during their formative years. She developed a relationship with bassist Stuart Sutcliffe -- the so-called fifth Beatle -- and was engaged to him until his death in 1962 at the age of 21.
Their relationship formed the basis of the 1994 movie “Backbeat,†which was recently turned into a stage production that ran at the Ahmanson Theatre this year.
The West Hollywood exhibition is taking place in a gallery named for the German company Leica Camera, a renowned brand that has been around since the early 20th century. The gallery said that Kirchherr took many of the photos in the exhibition with a Leica.
