Quibi is entering the streaming wars armed with a concept unlike any of its competitors.
Short for âquick bites,â the Hollywood-based company is aiming to shake things up with premium short-form video content developed for mobile phones.
Much like AppleTV+, Quibi is banking on the strength of its original programming â content created exclusively for its service. This sets it apart from streamers such as Netflix, Disney+ and the upcoming HBO Max, whose expansive libraries are padded by past movies and TV favorites.
Hereâs everything we know about Quibi so far.
Launching April 6, Quibi is a subscription streaming service for short-form video developed exclusively for mobile phones.
âWeâre not Facebook Watch. Weâre not Snapchat. Weâre not Instagram TV. Weâre not YouTube. Weâre Quibi, and itâs not denigrating those platforms at all ... but weâre staking out a premium position relative to those,â Quibi chief executive Meg Whitman previously told The Times.
Quibi is set to launch Monday -- amid the coronavirus lockdown.
Quibi will cost $4.99 a month with ads and $7.99 a month without ads (after a 2-week free trial). Those who visit the Quibi website and sign up before April 6 can unlock an offer for a 90-day free trial.
Because Quibi content was developed for phones, viewers will be able to toggle between different camera perspectives based on how they are watching on their phone screens. This means viewers could see shots framed differently when they hold the phone vertically than when they hold the phone horizontally on certain shows.
The Quibi app will also allow offline viewing.
The mobile Quibi app is required to access the service. The app is currently available for pre-order in both the Google Play store (Android devices) and Appleâs App Store (iOS devices).
Quibi content is broken up into three categories: âMovies in chapters,â which are longer narratives told in 7-10 minute installments; unscripted and docs, which are episodic nonfiction series about food, fashion, travel, animals, music, comedy and more; and daily essentials meant to keep viewers updated about everything they need to know.
Quibi says it will roll out 175 original shows and 8,500 episodes â all 10 minutes or less â during its first year. 50 titles will be available at launch.
